eBay listing SEO: what really helps your items get found
Titles, item specifics and good listing habits matter most. Here's an honest look at what helps eBay search show your items, and where your description fits in.

There's a lot of advice about "eBay SEO", and not all of it is helpful. This guide sticks to what's widely understood about how eBay search works, and is honest about where a well-written description helps and where it doesn't.
How eBay search decides what to show
eBay's search (often called Best Match) tries to show buyers the listings they're most likely to buy. It considers how well a listing matches what was searched, plus signals about the listing and the seller, such as price, delivery and returns options, and how buyers have responded to similar listings.
You can't control everything, but you can control the parts that matter most: what your listing says, how complete it is, and how attractive the offer is.
1. Write a title buyers would actually search for
Your title is the single most important piece of text in your listing. eBay gives you 80 characters, so use them:
- Lead with the essentials: brand, model and what the item is.
- Add the details people filter by: size, colour, capacity, material.
- Include condition where it helps, like "new with tags" or "refurbished".
- Skip filler like "L@@K", "WOW" or "amazing". They waste space and don't match real searches.
A good pattern is: Brand + Model + Item type + Key feature + Size/Colour. For example: Wireless Over-Ear Headphones, Noise Cancelling, 40h Battery, Black.
2. Fill in every item specific you can
Item specifics are the structured details you enter on eBay: brand, size, colour, type and so on. Buyers use them to filter results, so if a buyer filters by "Colour: Black" and you haven't filled in colour, your item may not appear at all.
Fill in every recommended specific that applies, and make sure they match your title and description.
3. Choose the right category
Listing in the right category helps your item appear in the right searches and filters. When eBay suggests categories, pick the most specific one that fits.
4. Make the offer attractive
Buyers compare. Competitive pricing, clear delivery options and a fair returns policy all help buyers choose you, and listings that sell well tend to keep being shown.
5. Great photos
The first photo is what buyers see in search results. Use a clean, bright photo on a plain background that shows the whole item. Add more photos for details, labels and any wear.
Where your description fits in
Your description matters a lot to the buyer, even if it isn't the main thing search reads. Once someone clicks, the description is what convinces them:
- It answers questions before they're asked, which means fewer messages and fewer returns.
- It builds trust: clear condition notes, what's in the box, delivery and returns details.
- It works on phones, where many buyers now shop.
So write your description for people first. Use your main keyword naturally in the opening sentence, describe the item clearly, and keep it easy to scan with short paragraphs and bullet points.
How the Lystro SEO score helps
The SEO tab in the Lystro editor checks the parts of your listing you control in the description:
- Title and keywords: is your main keyword in the title, and is the title using its 80 characters well?
- Description: is it long enough to be useful, easy to read, and free of keyword stuffing?
- Photos: do they all have descriptions and secure links?
- Item specifics and features: are the details buyers look for there?
- eBay's rules: does anything break the listing policies?
It also suggests keyword ideas for your product and offers one-click fixes. Use those keywords in your eBay title and item specifics too: that's where they help search the most.
Quick checklist
- Title uses most of the 80 characters, with brand, model, type, size and colour
- Every relevant item specific is filled in
- Most specific category chosen
- Clear first photo on a plain background
- Competitive price, delivery and returns
- A description that's easy to read on a phone
